The Affected Employees Now Have 60 Days to Find New Jobs in the Studio or Accept a Severance Package
Amazon Game Studios is currently working on a couple of projects, including Crucible, New World and a game streaming service. It is being reported that the studio laid off “dozens” of employees during the final day of E3 2019. Additionally, the studio is canceling the development of multiple unannounced projects. This does not bode well for the company.
An Amazon representative recently conducted an interview with Kotaku. Regarding the lay-offs, the rep says “Amazon Game Studios is reorganizing some of our teams to allow us to prioritize development of New World, Crucible, and new unannounced projects we’re excited to reveal in the future”
The rep continues, “These moves are the result of regular business planning cycles where we align resources to match evolving, long-range priorities. We’re working closely with all employees affected by these changes to assist them in finding new roles within Amazon. Amazon is deeply committed to games and continues to invest heavily in Amazon Game Studios, Twitch, Twitch Prime, AWS, our retail businesses, and other areas within Amazon.”
It usually is not a good sign for a company to make assurances regarding its commitment to a particular service or product. This certainly implies there have been discussions regarding complete closure.
Employee reshuffling is only the latest issue to arise for Amazon Game Studios. After making some high profile hires, such as Far Cry 2 director Clint Hocking and Portal director Kim Swift, both Hocking and Swift have moved onto other projects. Furthermore, Amazon’s massive investment in the Crytek engine used to create Lumberyard is not making a big splash.
