“Better to End With a Bang”, as the Cool Kids Say

Matches of Call of Duty: Vanguard could end in an unusual way: with a siren, and countdown, and a massive earth-shattering explosion. Who’s responsible? Well, the players, of course!

Killstreaks have been a staple of the Call of Duty franchise for a long while, and of them, the “nuke” reward has been by far the most devastating. In most games where it’s been available, getting 25 weapon kills (without dying) lets you raze the entire match, ending it after a short countdown. Now, just like in Call of Duty: WWII, the killstreak makes a return in Call of Duty: Vanguard – re-flavored to use a V2 rocket instead.

V2 rockets have appeared in Call of Duty games before, but their role as a killstreak is a new invention. They’ve served as plot devices and mission objectives in the campaigns of various titles, and can be found as map details in some Zombies maps.

It’s easy to see why a nuke-like killstreak is a popular feature: on top of being extremely cool, it stops players from lingering in games where they’re completely outmatched – letting them spend more time in better-balanced matches. It’s no surprise that it was brought back for Call of Duty: WWII, though given the setting, a re-flavor from nuke to V2 seems appropriate. And since Vanguard shares that WWII setting, it shares the rework.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is scheduled for a worldwide release on the 5th of November this year, on PlayStation & Xbox consoles, as well as PC. The game looks like a promising entry for the franchise, with many optimistic about its new gameplay mechanics and maps.
