CD Projekt RED Is Looking to “Change the Industry” with Cyberpunk 2077

While Cyberpunk 2077 made it’s official debut at this years E3 in epic fashion, there are still many questions left unanswered. As the anticipation for the intriguing title continues to increase worldwide it seems CD Projekt RED is offering up a little snippet of information every so often. In fact yesterday we found out that cybernetic implants could have dire consequences within the game and today another piece of news that does nothing to decrease the hype levels has arrived.

In the upcoming issue of EDGE Magazine the quest designer for Cyberpunk 2077 explained just what fans can hope to expect from the game and confirms that it will be a game changer in the industry. Here’s what Patrick Mills had to say, “One of the things about this company has always been we want to show the game industry how to do things. We want to change the game industry. We want to say, ‘We can do things differently, we don’t have to do things that way.’ It’s in our motto: ‘We are rebels,’ right?”

And apparently it’s not just about delivering something different in terms of gameplay. Mills talked about the fact that stroytelling will go a long way and won’t shy away from political topics. In fact, he says fans should indeed expect some heavy political issues to rear their heads. “So when you’ve got other studios saying, ‘Oh, no no no, there’s nothing political here’, we say, ‘Yeah, there is.’ It’s not necessarily what you’re expecting, and we’re not going to talk about exactly what we’re going to say- it’s for you to decide when you play it. But Cyberpunk is relevant to today, extremely so. To pretend like it’s not? Come on. Mike wouldn’t let us. Mike would throw a fit if we tried to say, ‘This is just about cool hairstyles and cool guns, that’s all.’” Of course he’s referencing Mike Pondsmith, the original creator of the tabletop board game, Cyberpunk 2020, the game is based off of.

What remains to be seen is just how far the team is willing to go and take those risks with their storytelling. I guess it’s only a matter of time until we find out. Currently however just how much time until then is hard to say as Cyberpunk 2077 does not currently have a release date or window.
