Cyberpunk 2077’s Character Creator Could Include Trans and Nonbinary Options
Cyberpunk 2077’s character creator might let players create transgender or nonbinary player characters, according to the game’s quest director at CD Projekt Red.
Talking with Gamasutra about the gender options in the game’s character creator, quest director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz said that the developer team wanted to include options to create trans or nonbinary characters.
“It’s a very sensitive and important subject I believe,” Tomaszkiewicz said. “We have put a lot of thought into this. One of the things we want to do in the final game (which we couldn’t show in the demo yet, because as you mentioned it’s a work in progress) is to give the players as many options of customization in the beginning of the game as we can.”
“For example, we want to do this thing where, as you create your character, after you choose the body type, you can, for example, use physical traits as you build your face that could be assigned to a man or a woman,” he added. Tomaszkiewicz also confirmed that nonbinary characters could also be made. However, according to him, these character creation features are still a work-in-progress and developing them is “not as easy as it sounds.”
CD Projekt Red has recently received criticism for an in-game ad that featured a trans character. Critics argued that the ad is transphobic but the studio’s art director has defended it.
