When Everything Is Backwards Compatible, Does Cross-Gen Even Matter?
The remake of Final Fantasy VII is arguably one of, if not, the biggest title at E3 right now. We just got word of the Collector’s Edition and all other editions of the game being available for pre-order. Aside from the price tag attached to it, there may be a reason to hold off on buying it. While it may be the updated, state of the art Final Fantasy VII Remake, apparently there will be an even newer version. In an interview with Game Informer, Square Enix president and CEO Yosuke Matsuda says the title will be cross-gen.
To be put more accurately, he says he believes it will be developed for PS5 as well. “I believe that our teams have made it so that the game will support both the next generation and the current generation of consoles. I believe it is being developed so that it is going to be playable on both, so I’m not really concerned about that and I believe that the fans are also going to be able to enjoy it on both, including the next-generation of consoles.” While that is a cool thing to hear, why exactly does cross-gen capabilities matter at this point?
A couple of months ago, Mark Cerny from PlayStation said that the PS5 will be backwards compatible with PS4 games. Why should we really care that the FFVII Remake will be on PS5 if all games will be on PS5? Sure, the PS5 is bound to be more powerful than its predecessor, but is that enough? The answer: probably. While I may be downplaying the importance of this news, I’m the guy who bought the Handsome Collection just so I could play Borderlands 2 on Xbox One. I bought the Final Fantasy X/X-2 Remaster even though I had both games on PS2, and the Ezio Collection so I could double up on the Gamerscore. I’m sure I’m not the only one either. Final Fantasy VII Remake is coming out on March 3rd, 2020 for PS4 and probably PS5 at some point.
