Can’t Take the Heat

Last week, Dejima Games released Firegirl: Hack ‘n Splash Rescue for PC. The game is a charming platformer with Roguelite elements. Firegirl fights off fire-monsters in all sorts of forms, while rescuing survivors from various fire emergencies. Your ol’ pal Zane played and reviewed the game, but thought there were several ways the game could have been improved.

To reiterate some of the issues, the controls were often unresponsive, the difficulty curve was as sharp as an axe, and failure was constant and totally not my fault. A few days after Firegirl: Hack ‘n Splash Rescue was released, the developers released a couple of updates that seemed to fix almost all the issues I had encountered.

Firegirl: Hack 'n Splash Rescue

The first update reworked the hose controls from the ground up. Originally, you would spray water and then adjust your aim higher or lower depending on the stream of the water. The hose now has a reticle that appears onscreen at all times, making it much “snappier” and more reliable.

The missions were also pretty difficult. There would be three survivors for Firegirl to rescue. It was almost impossible to find them all and escape the burning building alive and within the time limit. The new update introduced a difficulty curve, which toned down the number of survivors to find and made getting through the levels a little more manageable in the early stages of the game.

My original score for Firegirl made it seem kind of underwhelming, but with these updates in place, it is worth trying out. Firegirl: Hack ‘n Splash Rescue is out now for PC and will be out on consoles in 2022.
