The Same Can Be Said for Other Ubisoft Games Like Far Cry and Watch Dogs
Anyone who’s played an Assassin’s Creed game knows what the Animus is. For everyone else, it’s a futuristic piece of technology that allows someone to memory-jump back in time and experience the lives of their ancestors. It’s a cool narrative device that has served the series well despite it slowly taking a backseat in later games.
Typically, Assassin’s Creed games focus on a single historical period for each game — such as Ancient Egypt in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey or Victorian London in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate — but, as technology becomes more advanced, it sounds like Ubisoft might want to fit multiple time periods and open-world settings in a single game.
In a recent interview on Ubisoft’s website, Executive Vice President of Creative for Ubisoft’s Canadian studios, Lionel Raynaud, spoke about how advancements in technology might make it possible for players to witness several open-world settings in a single game.
“We will have technology that will break the [current] limits of memory, for instance, because of new technologies that are arriving,” Raynaud explains. “We would be able to – in the same world – have several historical periods, for instance, in Assassin’s Creed, and use the Animus to travel from one to the other.”
Raynaud isn’t just thinking about Assassin’s Creed. He goes on to mention how other Ubisoft games like Far Cry and Watch Dogs could feature “different countries in the same experience, seamlessly.”
While Raynaud doesn’t provide any more details relating to a specific part of video game tech, he could be expanding on the words said by Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot who recently said that future console generations could be centred around streaming thanks to cloud technology. Tech giant Google has also been rumoured to be developing a streaming-based console.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the next mainline game in the popular series, is due out on October 5th for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
