Calling All Jedi!

18 years ago, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic came out. The adoration hasn’t stopped since. The game maintains a score of 93 over on metacritic, and maintains a sizable fanbase to this day.

Needless to say, fans of the original game were ecstatic to hear the news: the game’s getting a PS5-exclusive remake, announced recently at the Playstation Showcase 2021 event.

Knights of the old Republic

But fans aren’t the only ones celebrating. In an interview with StarWars.com, some key development team members had their own comments about the announcement. “This has been something that is a dream for all of us.” and “It’s something that we’ve been very excited about and interested in for quite a long time. We’re just really excited to get in there and do this amazing game justice.”

Will the game be as revolutionary as it was in 2003? Probably not, but that’s not what remakes are for. The game is very old, and as you may expect, stands to benefit a ton from modern tech. Fans were trying for a while to get something like this off the ground, but sadly Lucasfilm shut that down. Looks like we now know why.

“We know that KOTOR is one of the most beloved Star Wars stories ever told,” A developer said. “We really appreciate the stature it has with all of the fans out there. As hardware advances and as our game-making prowess advances and as storytelling [techniques] advance, what better time to allow players to re-experience this great story with all of those lessons learned, and bring it back to modern platforms using modern methods? That’s something I’ve wanted to do personally for a very long time, and I think everybody involved with Star Wars games has wanted to do for a very long time.”
