Marvel’s Avengers Will No Longer Have Paid XP Boosters Starting Tonight

Marvel’s Avengers was added to Game Pass last month, and Square Enix started to sell consumable XP boosters to the game’s following, much to the fans’ dismay. This irked fans for two reasons. First, it was charging players to speed up the leveling process, after there were changes applied to slow it down this March. Second, the company had explicitly promised to the gaming community that the game “will not have random loot boxes or pay-to-win scenarios.”

We have decided that, by the end of the day, we will remove Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors for purchase,” the devs confirmed on social media.

After getting a lot of criticism from Marvel’s Avengers fans, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have decided to remove paid XP boosts. Clearly, the devs are taking into account what their fans have to say, considering that fans took to social media to voice out their disappointment—so much so that the devs issued a warning that harassment and abuse will not be tolerated.

Decisions at the studio are not made by one person—they are made by a group of studio leaders,” the statement read. “We welcome feedback, but it is not appropriate to target, threaten, or personally attack our community team.”

Marvel’s Avengers sold boosters, called Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors, that will allow players to speed up the rate at which they gained in-game currencies and XP. These were added to the marketplace about 3.27 seconds after the game was successful following its addition to Microsoft’s Game Pass—and not long after that, natural XP gain rates were reportedly heavily nerfed.

The gaming community is well aware about how modern games make money, but the case with Marvel’s Avengers was especially egregious given that Crystal Dynamics pledged before release that they will not be doing such thing. Before the game launched, the devs promised that they will only ever sell cosmetic items.

We have also committed that content purchasable with real money in Marvel’s Avengers will be aesthetic-only additions,” the studio announced pre-launch.
