Well, it’s not Virtual Boy 2.0

According to a originating from Nintendo World Report, the big N may have plans to bring VR to Switch – possibly within the year. nintendo labo 2

Nintendo Labo kits are rumoured to be the first up for receiving VR support, a spark that GoNintendo fanned by saying they had heard this from a “very trusted source” – although no other details as to what the Labo kit would contain was shared. There’s also talk that a “small number of select first-party titles” could see VR modes in the “not-so-distant” future.

While it is on record from Reggie that Nintendo has been experimenting with bringing VR to Switch, the company would need to make it “fun” before it could get the green light. His full statement on the matter was “This is something we constantly think about, experiment with. For virtual reality, we’ve said: it’s tech that we’re looking at, but in the end it has to be fun. That’s our mission, and that is what we do arguably better than anyone else.”

So while he had nothing to report at the time, we at least know that VR is on the minds of the right people at Nintendo. There have been other signs as well. Intrepid data miners have found a VR mode hidden in the Switch’s firmware, and in 2016 it was rumoured the hardware was delayed to add VR capabilities and the company will be participating as an observer at the VRM Consortium, a joint Japanese enterprise.

For now though, the rumour mill is spinning hard on this one. While Labo is certainly a smart choice for it, I’m more interested in what first-party titles could possibly see VR support. I get a little motion sick, so VR isn’t right for me, but I’d certainly try some First-Person Zelda, and how much cuter would Animal Crossing be in VR?!

Only time will tell what we’ll be seeing!
