PlatinumGames Would Love to Revisit Scalebound

During a recent interview with Eurogamer Portugal, PlatinumGames studio head Atsushi Inaba said the studio would love to revisit Scalebound but it’s 100% owned by Microsoft. The game was apparently a passion project for the studio and they were upset the project was cancelled. Inaba also confirmed that it was a choice that Microsoft didn’t necessarily want to make either and that neither parties wanted the project to fall by the wayside. Scalebound was meant to be one of the cutting edge Microsoft exclusive titles this season and it likely would’ve been a staple of the Game Pass subscription model.

When asked if PlatinumGames could ever return to the Scalebound IP, Atsushi Inaba responded: “Again, it’s a good question! But this was an intellectual property that belongs 100% to Microsoft. Whatever happens with this project, we can’t really do anything with it unless Microsoft leaves us. But it’s a game that we fall in love with and love. If the opportunity arises, it’s something we would love to return to.” Apparently the studio really loves Scalebound and would like to salvage the title but it’s up to Microsoft what happens with the title due to legality.

During an earlier interview, Atsushi Inaba said, “watching fans getting angry at Microsoft over the cancellation wasn’t easy for us to watch. Because the reality is, when any game in development can’t get released, it’s because both sides failed.” It’s great that PlatinumGames defends Microsoft’s plan to cancel Scalebound despite the fact that they loved the project so much. With Inaba still being so interested in the title, we’re curious what it was that prevented the game from being released.
