Retro Studios Has Acquired the Senior Art Director of Battlefield V

Retro Studios has picked up a renowned developer, Johny Ljungstedt, who’s been with EA DICE over twelve years. Ljungstedt took to LinkedIn to announce his jump to Retro after acting as art director for the studio for titles such as Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, Battlefield V and Medal of Honor. Since Retro has been looking for an art director since the middle of 2019, it’s likely that Ljungstedt will be reprising his former role for Metroid 4. Battlefield V is available on PC, Xbox One and PS4 but it’ll be a while before the Nintendo Switch exclusive Metroid 4 releases.

“Today was my last day at DICE,” said Johny Ljungstedt. “It’s with mixed feelings I’m leaving something that’s been part of my life for such a long time.” Ljungstedt was part of Pandemic Studios for three years when it was acquired by EA and before that, Ljungstedt had three additional years of experience at EA DICE as a 3D artist. Apparently he was welcomed back with open arms, becoming Senior Art Director for big titles like Battlefield 5.

Considering Johny Ljungstedt’s experience with military shooters, he’d likely be an asset for the Metroid 4 team, although it hasn’t been confirmed which Retro Studios title he’ll be working on. The development studio hasn’t put out a new game in six years and Metroid 4 has been marred by studio changes and a big delay that may have included an overhaul of the game so Ljungstedt may be coming in to fix an issue to help Retro release the game on schedule.

What do you expect Johny Ljungstedt to bring to the Retro Studios table? What’s your favorite title that the Senior Art Director worked on? Let us know in the comments below!
