The Population of Rage Quitters Increases
In just ten days, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the new sadist experience from developer From Software, has reached 10 million copies sold. The financial success marches in tandem with critical acclaim, as the game now sits on a 90+ score over on Metacritic.
The announcement of Sekiro units sold comes straight from Activision-Blizzard, publisher of the action-adventure title. The genre is seldom a part of the company’s video game pipeline, which is why it represents a new foray, a successful one at that. The success may lead to additional partnerships with esteemed studios. One day, we might even obtain a sequel to the macabre Samurai tale.
“Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has brought something very special and unique to Activision’s portfolio of games. It’s been an honor to work with FromSoftware to help introduce a brand-new franchise to gamers around the world,” said Michelle Fonseca, Vice President of Product Management and Marketing at Activision, in a press release. “The fans have made Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice one of the most incredible game launches of 2019 thus far. The game has performed well on all platforms including PC and we’re excited by the continued support from gamers and critics alike. It has been gratifying to see the enjoyment from fans when they overcome each challenge.”
In Activision-Blizzard’s report, the company also revealed that Sekiro was the #1 viewed Twitch game on launch day. Within the very first week, it was watched for 1.1 Billion minutes. Post-launch, a conversation surrounding the game’s accessibility has pressed on. You can read more in our dedicated article, “Video Games are for Everyone and so Should Sekiro.”
While I’m sure a powerhouse publisher helps, it’s clear that From Software’s reputation helped propel the success of their latest IP. The legacy of Dark Souls and Bloodborne still runs deep enough to entice the growing population of players who are gluttons for punishment. Which is why we’ll eagerly await the dev’s next project with bated breath.
