Surely They Won’t Call the First FF Show “Final Fantasy XIV”

Earlier today, Sony announced that they are partnering with Square Enix to make a TV show based on the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. So far, the only details (if you want to call it that) is that the story will be set in Eorzea, where the game takes place. It will also be an original story, one not explored in the game or its expansions, presumably. The Final Fantasy XIV TV series cast, release date, or really anything else is announced.

The press release gave a vague description of the plot which will revolve around “the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict.” When you think about it, a lot of Final Fantasy games explore that theme in some way. This usually means big guns, big swords, big spells. A statement equally vague was “the live-action debut of Cid”, which extremely helpful because there is really the one and only Cid. Not. But since this is a Final Fantasy XIV show, presumably they are talking about Cid Garlond from the game.

If you are exhausted by all the Hollywood adaptations of games, don’t fret. Think about how many of these announcements are actually seen all the way through. Remember that Halo movie? The Borderlands film? The Last of Us movie? All the ones that never actually happened? It is certainly possible that this show will never be made, but more recent ventures such as Monster Hunter, The Witcher, Tomb Raider, and Assassin’s Creed came through. Also, supplementary films in the Final Fantasy catalogue suggest a strong possibility of this coming to fruition; Advent Children, Brotherhood, Kingsglaive, not Spirits Within. Again no release date or streaming platform or anything yet.
