According to Translated Interview With Shuntaro Furukawa, Supply Issues Are Going to Continue

Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X have all been in very high demand in 2021. It’s all due to the global chip shortage that’s been due to…well, everyone sadly knows. There was a production shortage in 2021 for the Nintendo Switch, and it seems that it will continue well into 2022.

While this isn’t surprising news by any means, there was an interview with the Nintendo President this week, Shuntaro Furukawa. According to the interview translation, that was conducted by the Japanese newspaper Kyoto Shimbun, these delays will be due to a ” shortage of semiconductors and logistical turmoil”. Furukawa admitted that they had to lower their expectations because of this for the next fiscal year by 1.5 million.

Supplies for the Nintendo Switch will even become, according to the president, “stagnant”. And this will continue to be so for some time to come in Japan, as well for global distribution in 2022. And while there had been some relief during Black Friday for North America, particularly the United States, that isn’t going to last. The same can be said for Europe, as they were only able to use first use rail transportation to ship the Switch in the fall of 2021.

it depends on the demand, but as we had feared, we will not be able to produce as many as we want to,” said Furukawa.

It seems that the demands are still very high for any of the newer consoles. Enough that some are going with the OLED model of the Switch, instead of the newer models. It’s a compromise some people have had to make because the desire to play games is much stronger than the ability to wait.

But with the possibility of waiting a year or possibly more for a Nintendo Switch, and with some pretty great games coming out, who can possibly wait?

That’s a question all of us will have to ask ourselves in the desire for the latest console- whether it’s better to wait and see or compromise.
