Here Are the 10 Best PSVR Games in the First Half of 2019

VR is gaining huge momentum as a gaming platform, and there’s no better example of that than the PlayStation VR. Having sold millions of units, the PSVR has brought VR games to the masses and its library of titles is growing fast. But it’s not just about quantity — the last few years have seen a steady stream of high quality PSVR games released, and that trend has only accelerated in 2019 with tons of great titles in just the first half of this year alone. That’s why we’ve taken the time to showcase some of the best PSVR games so far in 2019. Let’s take a look.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

Now, technically, this is not only a VR game – Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is a traditional title for PS4 and other platforms, and it’s great. But, if you’re a PSVR owner you get a special treat: there is an amazing exclusive VR mode that features 5 extra missions in full-immersion virtual reality. As I said back in January when I first reviewed it, flying a fighter jet in VR is quite literally a game changer. The moment you lift off that aircraft carrier and soar up into the blue sky, you’ll get goosebumps and this is maybe the closest you’ll ever come to fulfilling that childhood dream of being a badass fighter pilot. Check this one out and see what I mean.

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality

Rick and Morty is a show that certainly doesn’t appeal to everybody, but if you are a fan of the show and you own a PSVR then this game is a no-brainer. Essentially a Rick and Morty version of Job Simulator, Virtual Rick-ality places you in the role of a clone Morty, assigned to do various tasks for Morty’s douchebag/genius grandfather Rick Sanchez. It is a bit thin on story but the few hours of gameplay it does offer are fun and often hilarious, especially if you appreciate the humor of the show. Plus, there’s tons of cool references to past episodes and appearances by secondary characters including my personal fave, Mr. Meeseeks.

Falcon Age

This title, from Outer Loop Games, has gotten high praise for its deep and thoughtful narrative and cool gameplay that has you teamed up with a falcon companion to free your planet from invading colonizers. It’s the ultimate underdog story, and the deep connection you make with your flying friend will stay with you long after you take off your PSVR headset. Built specifically for VR, Falcon Age can be played as a regular game but that would deny you a truly thrilling and impactful PSVR experience. This is one of many titles lately that proves VR games can go toe-to-toe with the regular AAA titles.

Everybody’s Golf VR

As HotShots Golf, this game has actually been around for years on various platforms, but the move to PSVR as Everybody’s Golf VR takes the experience to the next level. As our own reviewer Lou Sytsma noted in June, the use of Move controllers to physically swing your club makes for a much more immersive experience, coupled with the game’s surprisingly nuanced details that take into account the angle, speed and strength of your swing. Then there’s the beautiful, realistic courses that really show off the PSVR’s potential to transport you via the use of visuals and sound. Tee this one up and give it a shot — you won’t be disappointed.

Mini-Mech Mayhem

The PSVR seems to have no shortage of games featuring cute little robots, as we saw last year with the incredible Astro Bot Rescue Mission. But Mini-Mech Mayhem, despite the cuddly presentation, also features some surprisingly-deep strategy once you get into it. Playing against three other players, you must use your customizable little mech robot to outlast your foes on a tile-based grid game board. Its turn-based gameplay is fun and thought-provoking, forcing you to take into account your enemies’ potential moves as well as your own. It may not be as complex as Chess, but it is a nice blend of pleasant visuals with intelligent strategy, especially when you pit your skills against other humans in online play.
