The Creator Of the Franchise Reveals Why He Chose Them To Make the Game

The mastermind behind the highly respected Cyberpunk series is a man by the name of Mike Pondsmith. His series had humble beginnings as a tabletop RPG way back in the 80s. To turn his franchise into a video game he approached countless studios in order to make it happen. However, CD Projekt Red was the only one he was able to trust enough to give them the licensing for the game.

In an interview with the Video Games Chronicle, Pondsmith revealed the reasoning behind his decision. He chose Projekt Red because he felt that the developers were genuine fans of the series, rather than outsiders just trying to make a quick buck. Pondsmith said that the people who made up CD Projekt Red all grew up playing the classic board game Cyberpunk 2020. Pondsmith compared it to ” a bunch of guys who watched the Star Wars movies as kids and then got a chance to make a Star Wars game.”

Pondsmith’s gut feeling has seemed to pay off. The hype behind the game is massive. And what we have seen so far from trailers and gameplay demos makes it look like an easy game of the year candidate. The time it has taken to develop the game also speaks volumes to how much care has gone into the game. This definitely doesn’t appear to be a corporate cash grab that a ton of larger video game developers might have done if they were at the helm of the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 is only a few months away now. Scheduled to drop in April of 2020, it will be interesting to see if Pondsmith is happy with the final product.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
